Rogue Brewing’s Voodoo Doughnut’s Bacon Maple Ale

I think the thing that stuck with me the most about this beer was the scent of it after I popped it open. It had this remarkable smokey bacon and maple scent that was such incomparably awesome start to a beer. I’ve never been so impressed by an exotic flavored beer’s aroma. It was lovely.

The beer pours this sort of off orangey soft color. It’s unique. Bubbly and had lacy head. The smokey smells just pouring out of the glass. It really has a delightful smell.

The beer itself is an incredible drink. The smoked malts just richly shine alongside the mapley bacon. The bacon dances around in the background and isn’t overwhelming the beer with some sort of meaty weird flavor. It’s a bacon wrapped smokey maple beer.
The strange thing is this beer just really defied my expectations all over the place. It was very drinkable and smooth, the flavor was strong, but not overwhelming. It was well balanced and almost light, not syrupy or goopy. It was really strange but beautiful and lovely.

That said, this beer has faced a lot of negative reviews, which I now view most as largly unfair. This beer is a one-time experimental beer Rogue made to prove they can make some amazingly expectation defying beer – and push the limits and imagination of beer making to new heights. I really hope Rogue doesn’t listen to the critics and chooses to brave forward and make more of this fantastic beer.

This is an uncommon beer full of imagination and surprise. A must try & one of my favorites of 2012 thus far.
