Eben Burgoon

I’ve worked in the comic book industry for over 10 years; collaborating on a wide-variety of projects and creators, within various disciplines, skill levels, & styles.

Most noted work includes collaborating with Starburns Industries, the animation studio founded by Dan Harmon and Dino Stamatopulous. In 2019, the studio published my creator-owned series, B-Squad, under the studio’s “comic book to animated series” incubator, SBI Press, in 2019. Additionally, I served as an educator and mentor for two youth-writer and adult-illustrated comic book projects for a local youth literacy non-profit.

I’m available for work-for-hire and freelance writing, book design, and digital lettering in comic books. I’ve also open to considering design work outside of comic books on a project to project basis. I’m also open to doing illustration for children’s book, comic books, and graphic novels, please contact for examples.

Writing For Comics

For comic book writing, I will happily consider and am open to shared equity or revenue-share for creator-owned projects that may tickle me.

For any licensed or studio-owned work, I’m open, too. For a complete pitch, plot, & full script, my current page rate $150/page.

For a 24-page issue, on average, I can work on a 3-week deadline per issue.

Lettering for Comics

I prefer to used Adobe Illustrator for digital lettering and Comicraft fonts available on www.comicbookfonts.com .

My standard rate is $45/page + applicable licenses. I will consider, but not terribly interested in equity or revenue share projects for lettering.

For a 24-page comic, on average, I can work on a 2-week deadline.

Book Design for Assorted Projects

For book design, I prefer to use Adobe InDesign and bill based on the project with applicable licenses.

Lettered all 5 missions contained in Volume 2, and in the Starburns Industries Press re-release of Mission One, which was selected as a San Diego Comic Con 50th Anniversary exclusive.

I also wrote these books.

Tiny Wizards

With assists from Michael Sekigahama, I completed the lettering for the debut issue of my new series, Tiny Wizards in 2021. The lettering was completed digitally using Adobe Illustrator over Dean Beattie’s hand-painted pages.

I also wrote this book.

Other Work

I’ve also done lettering work for assorted projects over the years, some very minor. Additionally, for many years, I was a sign painter for Trader Joe’s in Sacramento and also have done a multitude of graphic design and logo projects as well.

Book Design Portfolio

Most of my book design work has been in comic books. However, I’ve also done book design for novels and short fiction collections, role playing games and rulebooks, “How-To” instruction books, trade publications, magazines, and other anthologies and collections — plus several zines and my own pet projects.

I’m familiar with designing for print projects that call for spot gloss or UV, slip-casing, foil stamping, embossing, sequential numbering, hardcover, trade spines, and soft-touch lamination. I have experience with exporting for both ePub and PDF, and Comixology approval and other digital publishers. I also have sourced printing partners that can produce books both internationally and domestically.

B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune

For my 10 mission series, I did all of the book design work with limited exceptions. B-Squad Volume One was delivered as a slip-cased trade paperback with spot-UV cover on the trade. The work on the slipcase is still featured on PrintNinja’s website.

Tiny Wizards

While it is also my own series, I designed the book layout and feel for Tiny Wizards. The aesthetic choice was to mimic the feel of fast food restaurant menu. Much of this was achieved by my own design work and the use of stock images and other assets.

RelicBlade: Rulebook

I completed the book design for the very first rulebook for Metal King Studio’s smash-hit table-top skirmish game, Relicblade in 2016, before working on the first edition of 120+ page hard-bound “The Seeker’s Handbook”.
Subsequent editions and expansions have used the core work and style that I set in collaboration with the game’s creator, Sean Sutter.
