Got an email from Ethan Nicolle of Axe Cop, who listened to this episode and decided to clear up the debate. I think this marks yet another win for the D. Bethel?
“Dear Eben07 guys,
my Google alerts brought your podcast to my attention so I decided to give it a listen. I figured I would answer some of the questions you guys raised. Mainly… yeah, I got very lucky. It wasn’t just Twitter… but it wasn’tmuch more on my end. We did post links to Stumble Upon and Digg on our site. But what really got Axe Cop viral was when sites like Reddit and the community on Twitter started passing the link around. It happened over night. One day no one knew Axe Cop at all, the next morning I had an email from Entertainment Weekly saying it was site of the day, an email from Wired Magazine… and soon emails from publishers and talent scouts all over the US. It was pretty crazy. Doug TenNapel is a good friend of mine and he does often help to promote my stuff, but even his reach could not have gotten Axe Cop the attention it did. The link made it to people like Simon Pegg and the MST3K guys and they passed it on… more big sites like MTV and USA Today posted reviews. It was something I never saw coming and honestly did not in the beginning plan at all. I figured Axe Cop was a cute little comic for my family mainly to enjoy and the web site was created for practice… to get the hang of functionality for a web comic before I went on and made my “real” web comic which is still on the back burner since Axe Cop took over.
Anyway, it is true that Axe Cop probably does have longevity issues because it’s author won’t be a child forever even if the writing remains interesting. I never planned on Axe Cop even being what it now is, so I am not planning on doing it forever. Mainly… I am not planning much. It’s sort of a ride I go thrown onto. Hopefully that answers some of your questions.
I appreciate the kind words about my art. I wish you guys the best with your comic.
Ethan Nicolle”
