D. Bethel's Review
Eben07's Review
Thumbs up.  While not the most artistically
advanced webcomic on the internet, it most
certainly has a discernible style to it that makes
it quite unique.  Mr. Dell’Aringa’s artistic
strength is in the unity the entire artistic quality
of the strip has.  From the font of the text (I
can’t even tell if it’s hand-lettered or a digital) to
the color and the rendering of shading, it’s all
very singular and whole.  Because of that, I’m
drawn to the strip (pardon the pun), and am
interested to see simply how Mr. Dell’Aringa will
draw what’s coming up.  I do feel it is a bit
awkward when regarding Captain John, and the
first few strips featuring Ugo were strange (a
few times it looked like Ugo was staring at the
reader by the punchline), but he seems to be
getting a handle on his design.  Being a science
fiction strip, I hope Mr. Dell’Aringa will
experiment more with angles and backgrounds.

Thumbs up.  There is definitely a progression
here, though it’s hard to see where it may be
going.  I kind of wonder if he’s not making it up
as he goes along, but I’ll give him the benefit of
the doubt.  It’s a humor strip with an on-going
story that so far is letting the humor dominate
the progression of the strip.  It’s a delicate
balance not easily maintained, and I think he
sometimes is sacrificing the progression of the
story for the sake of a punchline.  It’s still a very
young strip, so I’m still game to see where this
goes.

Thumbs down.  As said above, the need to
drop a punchline with every strip is making this
story move extremely slow.  Considering that it
updates only once a week, we need either more
content per week to help push things along or
less of a focus on the jokes to keep me
interested. Again, as said above, it’s a balance
that’s hard to maintain, and compromises must
be made.  Though with it only being updated
once a week, I think it would suit his readership
best to update with a larger comic than the
general 3-panel style strip he’s been doing.

Thumbs up. A WordPress blog design that is
perfectly serviceable and standard.  He’s already
got a great header image that pretty much sets
up the strip for any new reader.  On top of that,
he’s got a new reader tab, a forum, and links,
and a side bar with all the other fancy links like
an about the artist page, a FAQ, illustrations
page, etc.  It almost seems to be too much for
such a new strip.  Very easy to navigate, though
it does seem a little “seen before” in the world of
webcomics.

Thumbs up. A pretty nifty comic hampered
only, if by anything, by the creator’s still settling
designs, slow pacing, and once-a-week update
schedule.  Other than that it seems to have all
the elements to make a pretty nifty comic strip.

This strip is teetering on its feet as a young
toddler of a comic. It’s got some nifty characters
and a classic foundation that could play out
interestingly.  I’m a little worried that Mr. Dell’
Aringa may be flying by the seat of his pants,
but I hope I’m wrong.  I’m going to wait a little
while before I pass any serious judgment.

Additional Thoughts
Thumbs up. The art is the main thing that this
comic has going for it. With the solid and simple
character designs. I honestly see a little Tin Tin
meets the campy nature of Space Quest in
Captain John.
I really feel like this could be a decent comic for
the newspapers. It has a very fluid design to it,
and doesn't really seem to rely on the coloring
to make it attractive.
There a very few weak spots in terms of the art,
but the few kinks there are you can see are
being worked on in each panel.
I do feel that this comic will probably grow in
terms of its art and become very sharp.

Thumbs up/Thumbs down. I am pretty sure
it is a thumbs up, because it sounds to me as
though the creator is looking for this comic to
be a kind of family fun comic that isn't going to
turn into a massive complex story with some
solid dramatic combinations. The comic is also
really young, if the creator wanted to go after a
more adult age, there is still oppurtiunity, but
right now it seems as though he is fine creating
a comic he and his daughter can enjoy together.
I applaud that effort, and if that's the way he
want it I hope he doesn't back away from that
route. However, I think if it is going to hold my
interest, there will need to be more sustance to
the story. It does seem like it is going to hit
some important plot points in the next few
comics. I will be watching to see where he takes
it.

Thumbs up/Thumbs Down. This is really
dependant on what the creator is trying to
accomplish. If his goals are to have a fun
webcomic that is fun for a younger audience to
read with their folks on a leisurely - then there
isn't anything to worry about and I'd give a solid
thumbs up. However, for an older reader, there
needs to be a little more of a draw. It is certainly
easy enough to understand the action - I would
just like to see more of a developing story.

Thumbs up.  Solid work of the Comic Press
system. The layout and colors are great.
Definitely a solid presentation that should
confuse any readers - and enough content in
the links to quickly catch up as the comic
progresses. Its good work.

Thumbs up. I like the idea of a Robinson
Crusoe style story in the sci-fi setting. i used to
really enough Invader Zim, and I could see this
sort of being a similar fish out of water story
and have some good stories in the future (no
pun intended) - its a pretty enjoyable take and
fun to enjoy.

Again, any thumbs downs see above really have
a lot to do with where the creator wants to be
with this comic in the future. I think this could
be a fantastic comic for a younger audience. I'd
like to see Marooned do the sort of Pixar thing
where the story in enchanting enough to hold
an adults attention span and have a kid in
hysterics. I think its completely possible and I
am looking forward to see if that bridge is made.

Anyway, another problem was the age of this
comic. Reviewing comics that don't have much
of an archive is definetly something we need to
avoid, but hopefully they are helpful for the
creators.
